The Shorts I’ll Wear Most This Summer

Last summer, I bought a few nicer pairs of shorts that I did wear quite a bit, but I ended up running out to buy super casual shorts I could just pull on and go. I needed shorts that I could wear around the pool, lake, beach, to throw on over my swim suit or to run errands, and go to various outdoor sporting and kid events that wouldn’t show or stick to my sweat. After seeing a few of my friends wearing the Madewell pull-on shorts, I decided that’s exactly what I needed.

Unfortunately, by the time I got there, they were already sold out. It’s by far their most popular short, and they carry it every year. Well, that wasn’t going to happen to me this year! I’ve already purchased this black pair and this…

…fun striped pair!

These shorts have an elastic waist band and are loose without looking sloppy. They also have pockets! Plus, they look great on so many body types, and they come in a wide range of sizes! For sizing reference, I’m wearing an xxs in the picture.

Outfit ideas: I like the way they look with a casual button down blouse (pictured). A popover shirt or a linen shirt would be cute, too. And to dress them up a bit, you could wear some espadrilles (here and here). I also love that these look great with t-shirts and flip flops. And I’ll be honest, these are probably the shorts I’ll end up wearing most this summer.

How is the sizing? I’m 5’4 120 and usually a small. I have an insecurity about my legs and usually like my shorts a touch bigger but don’t know if that makes them look good or not? What is your advice on that? What size do you think I should try on these?

Hi Melissa! Thanks for asking for my advice. I wish we could talk in person. It’s very hard to tell styling advice in writing because I run the risk of sounding insensitive. That is not my intent, and just know, I’m not without my own insecurities. But since you asked, I’m going to shoot you straight. I’ve had clients that like their shorts to be a bit bigger/larger because in their minds, it would make their legs look smaller. Unfortunately, larger shorts only add width to the horizontal line and have a bulking effect. Therefore, it’s best to buy shorts the smallest size you can. I think an xxs or xs would fit you best. I’m wearing an xxs in the picture.

Hi, what’s the brand of the short sleeve lavender shirt you wore with the black Madewell shorts?

Hi! It’s Madewell’s central top. I hope this helps!
